Job Brief
The Yard Conductor plays a critical role in coordinating the activities of switch-engine crews within railroad yards, industrial plants, or similar locations. This position requires a strong understanding of train operations, safety protocols, and efficient scheduling to ensure smooth railroad traffic operations. Ideal candidates possess prior experience in the railroad industry, alongside excellent communication and leadership skills to manage train crew activities effectively.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and oversee the activities of switch-engine crews to facilitate safe and efficient train operations.
- Review train schedules and switching orders to ensure compliance with operational standards.
- Direct the makeup and breakup of freight and passenger trains within the yard.
- Manage yard switching activities, ensuring timely and accurate movement of rail cars.
- Communicate effectively with train crews and other personnel to maintain operational efficiency.
- Monitor safety protocols and regulations to ensure a safe working environment for all employees.
- Document and report any discrepancies or incidents occurring within the yard.
- Assist in training new employees on safety practices and operational procedures.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in transportation or logistics is a plus.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in railroad operations or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of railroad safety practices and regulations.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills to manage diverse teams.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and perform physical tasks related to railroad operations.
- Familiarity with train scheduling systems and switching operations.
- Valid certification or training in railroad operations is preferred.
- Proficient in using communication devices and technology related to railroad operations.
