Job Brief

The V/STOL Landing Signal Officer (LSO) plays a critical role in managing and directing the operation and maintenance of catapults, arresting gear, and associated mechanical, hydraulic, and control systems, primarily in aircraft carrier takeoff and landing operations. This position requires extensive experience in aviation operations, strong leadership skills, and the ability to ensure the safety and readiness of launch and recovery systems. The V/STOL LSO collaborates with engineering teams to design, test, and implement advanced systems, providing technical guidance and training to personnel on carrier operations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the operation and maintenance of catapult and arresting gear systems to ensure optimal functionality during launch and recovery operations.
  • Oversee the readiness and safety of visual landing aid systems and associated equipment.
  • Plan and coordinate the design, development, and testing of launch and recovery systems for new aircraft integrations.
  • Prepare technical specifications for catapult and arresting gear installations, evaluating design proposals for efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Determine handling equipment requirements for new aircraft, ensuring compatibility with existing systems.
  • Develop and maintain detailed technical data and operational instructions for landing aids to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Train personnel in carrier takeoff and landing procedures to promote safety and proficiency in operations.
  • Conduct regular inspections and maintenance checks on all relevant systems and equipment to comply with safety regulations.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in aviation operations, particularly in V/STOL or carrier-based aircraft environments.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and control systems related to aircraft launch and recovery.
  • Technical expertise in the maintenance and operation of catapults and arresting gear.
  • Certification as a Landing Signal Officer or equivalent recognized training in aviation operations.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills to effectively train and guide personnel.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make critical decisions in high-stakes environments.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and regulations governing aviation operations.
