Job Brief
The Train Brake Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of railroad systems, focusing on monitoring and controlling train brake systems, track switches, and locomotive instruments. Ideal candidates will possess a strong understanding of rail operations and safety protocols, along with hands-on experience in coupling and uncoupling rolling stock. Key skills include attention to detail, communication, and the ability to respond quickly to signals and potential hazards.
Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor railroad track switches and locomotive instruments to ensure safe train operations.
- Couple and uncouple rolling stock to form or disband trains as required.
- Observe and relay traffic signals and communicate with train crews to maintain operational efficiency.
- Inspect air hoses, couplings, journal boxes, and hand brakes to ensure safety standards are met.
- Monitor for dragging equipment or obstacles on the rights-of-way to prevent accidents.
- Conduct routine maintenance checks and report any abnormal conditions or equipment malfunctions.
- Follow all safety regulations and operational protocols to maintain a safe work environment.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or certification in rail operations is a plus.
- Proven experience as a Train Brake Operator or in a similar role within the railroad industry.
- Strong understanding of railroad safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Ability to operate and troubleshoot locomotive instruments and braking systems.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Physical stamina to perform manual tasks and respond to emergencies as needed.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to pass background checks and drug tests.
