Job Brief
The Surgical First Assistant plays a critical role in the operating room by assisting surgeons during surgical procedures. This position requires hands-on experience in surgical techniques, the ability to collaborate effectively with surgical teams, and a deep understanding of anatomy and surgical protocols. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to stay composed under pressure, ensuring optimal patient outcomes during surgeries.
Responsibilities
- Assist surgeons in performing surgical procedures by providing direct support and assistance.
- Prepare the surgical site by positioning the patient and ensuring a sterile environment.
- Make incisions and close surgical sites under the supervision of a licensed surgeon, in compliance with state laws.
- Manipulate or remove tissues and implant surgical devices or drains as directed by the surgeon.
- Suction the surgical site and manage the flow of fluids during procedures to maintain visibility and safety.
- Place catheters, clamp or cauterize vessels or tissue, and apply dressings to surgical sites following surgery.
- Monitor patient vitals and assist with any necessary interventions during the surgical procedure.
- Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure efficient workflow and adherence to safety protocols.
Requirements
- Completion of an accredited Surgical First Assistant program or equivalent training.
- Current certification as a Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) or similar credential preferred.
- Proven experience in an operating room setting, demonstrating knowledge of surgical instruments and procedures.
- Strong understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and surgical techniques.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with healthcare professionals.
- Ability to work well under pressure and make quick decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.
- Compliance with state regulations regarding surgical practice and assistant roles.
