Job Brief
The Steam Shovel Operator is responsible for operating various types of power construction equipment, including steam shovels, bulldozers, and front-end loaders, to excavate, move, and grade earth for construction projects. This role requires proficiency in equipment operation, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of safety protocols. Ideal candidates possess experience in heavy machinery operation and have the ability to perform routine maintenance and repairs on equipment.
Responsibilities
- Operate steam shovels and other heavy equipment to excavate, move, and grade materials according to project specifications.
- Perform site preparation, including clearing and grading land for construction projects.
- Load and unload materials, ensuring proper handling to minimize damage.
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance on equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety compliance.
- Collaborate with site supervisors and construction teams to meet project deadlines and specifications.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and protocols to maintain a safe working environment.
- Assist in training new operators and crew members on equipment use and safety procedures.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; relevant vocational training is a plus.
- Proven experience as a Steam Shovel Operator or in a similar role within the construction industry.
- Valid operator’s license and certifications for heavy machinery operation.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform basic repairs and maintenance.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in equipment operation.
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions and physical environments.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
