Job Brief
As a Ship Harbor Pilot, you will command and supervise the operations of various water vessels, including tugboats and ferryboats. This critical role requires extensive knowledge of maritime navigation, vessel handling, and local waterways. Candidates should possess a U.S. Coast Guard-issued license and demonstrate strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills to ensure the safe and efficient transit of ships in and out of harbor areas.
Responsibilities
- Directly oversee the navigation and maneuvering of ships and water vessels within harbor limits.
- Assess weather conditions, tides, and currents to determine safe passage for vessels.
- Coordinate with harbor authorities, tugboat operators, and crew members to facilitate safe docking and undocking procedures.
- Provide expert advice on navigational hazards and local maritime regulations.
- Conduct safety inspections and ensure compliance with all maritime laws and safety protocols.
- Respond swiftly to emergency situations and implement contingency plans as necessary.
- Maintain detailed logs of vessel movements and communication with port control.
Requirements
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard license for Ship Harbor Pilot or equivalent certification.
- Proven experience in piloting vessels in harbors and coastal waters.
- Strong understanding of maritime law, navigation, and safety practices.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with crew and port officials.
- Ability to work under pressure and make quick, informed decisions.
- Knowledge of local waterways, shipping routes, and environmental factors affecting navigation.
- Physical fitness to handle the demands of the role, including working in varying weather conditions.
