Job Brief
The Service Forester is responsible for managing public and private forested lands to achieve economic, recreational, and conservation objectives. This role involves performing timber inventories, appraising timber value, negotiating procurement contracts, and developing strategies for wildlife habitat conservation. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of environmental regulations, and experience in tree planting, growth monitoring, and optimal harvesting scheduling.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive inventories of standing timber, assessing species, volume, and quality.
- Appraise timber value and negotiate purchase agreements for timber procurement.
- Develop and implement management plans for sustainable forest practices and conservation initiatives.
- Evaluate and maintain wildlife habitats, water quality, and soil stability in forested areas.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations related to forestry.
- Design and oversee reforestation projects, including tree planting and growth monitoring.
- Create optimal harvesting schedules that balance economic interests with ecological sustainability.
- Collaborate with stakeholders, including landowners, government agencies, and conservation groups.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Proven experience in forest management, timber appraisal, and sustainable forestry practices.
- Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and conservation techniques.
- Proficiency in GIS software and forestry management tools.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills for stakeholder engagement.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects effectively.
- Certifications such as Certified Forester (CF) or similar credentials are preferred.
