Job Brief

As a School Bus Mechanic, you will be responsible for diagnosing, adjusting, repairing, and overhauling school buses and trucks, with a specific focus on maintaining and repairing diesel engines. This role requires a skilled technician with experience in automotive or marine diesel engines, ensuring the safety and reliability of school transportation vehicles. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to high-quality service are essential for success in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose mechanical issues in school buses and trucks using diagnostic equipment and tools.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on diesel engines, including oil changes, filter replacements, and brake inspections.
  • Overhaul and rebuild major components, such as engines, transmissions, and rear axles.
  • Conduct safety inspections and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, and inspections performed on each vehicle.
  • Collaborate with other mechanics and transportation staff to resolve vehicle issues efficiently.
  • Stay current with technological advancements in diesel engine repair and maintenance practices.
  • Assist in ordering and managing inventory of parts and supplies needed for repairs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; certification from a vocational school or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Proven experience as a bus mechanic or in a similar role, with a strong understanding of diesel engine systems.
  • ASE certification in Diesel Engines or related fields preferred.
  • Proficient in using diagnostic tools, hand tools, and power tools relevant to vehicle repair.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; CDL preferred.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
