Job Brief

The Railway Switch Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of railroad track switches and locomotive instruments. This role involves monitoring train movements, coupling and uncoupling rolling stock, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. The ideal candidate will possess strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and relevant experience in railway operations, making this position vital for maintaining operational efficiency and safety on the rail network.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor railroad track switches to direct train movements safely.
  • Couple and uncouple rolling stock for train assembly and disassembly.
  • Monitor and relay traffic signals to ensure safe train operations.
  • Inspect couplings, air hoses, journal boxes, and hand brakes for functionality.
  • Identify and report any dragging equipment or obstacles on rights-of-way.
  • Maintain accurate records of train movements and switch operations.
  • Collaborate with other railway personnel to ensure operational safety and efficiency.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and operational procedures in accordance with industry standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional training in railway operations preferred.
  • Proven experience in railway operations or a related field.
  • Strong mechanical skills and ability to operate locomotive instruments.
  • Knowledge of railway safety protocols and regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills for relaying signals and instructions.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and environments.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Certification in railway operations may be required depending on jurisdiction.
