Job Brief
As a Railcar Switcher, you will be responsible for operating switching locomotives and dinkey engines within various settings, including railroad yards, industrial plants, quarries, and construction projects. This role requires a keen understanding of rail operations, safety protocols, and efficient train handling techniques. Successful candidates will possess a solid background in railroad operations, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
Responsibilities
- Operate switching locomotives to move railcars within designated areas safely and efficiently.
- Inspect and monitor railcars for mechanical issues and compliance with safety regulations.
- Coordinate with yardmasters and other personnel to ensure timely and accurate train movements.
- Maintain clear communication with team members to facilitate smooth operations and prevent accidents.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on locomotives and associated equipment.
- Document daily operations, including movements, incidents, and maintenance activities.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and regulatory standards to ensure a safe working environment.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional vocational training in rail operations is a plus.
- Proven experience as a railcar switcher or in a related railroad operations role.
- Valid locomotive engineer certification and/or relevant safety certifications.
- Strong understanding of railroad safety regulations and operating procedures.
- Ability to operate heavy machinery and perform basic mechanical tasks.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
