Job Brief

The Psychiatric Orderly plays a critical role in providing compassionate support to mentally impaired or emotionally disturbed patients within psychiatric settings. Working under the supervision of nursing and medical staff, the Psychiatric Orderly assists with daily living activities, facilitates educational and recreational activities, and ensures patient safety during examinations and treatments. Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with daily living activities, including personal hygiene, meal preparation, and mobility support.
  • Lead and engage patients in therapeutic educational and recreational activities to promote mental well-being.
  • Accompany patients to medical examinations and treatments, ensuring their safety and comfort.
  • Monitor patient behavior and report any changes to nursing and medical staff promptly.
  • Implement safety protocols and restrain violent patients as necessary to maintain a secure environment.
  • Help maintain cleanliness and order in patient living areas, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Assist in the documentation of patient progress and behavioral observations.
  • Support the mental health team in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; certification in psychiatric or mental health care preferred.
  • Prior experience in a psychiatric facility or similar healthcare environment is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of mental health disorders and patient care practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients and staff.
  • Ability to remain calm and composed in high-pressure situations, demonstrating effective crisis management skills.
  • Physical stamina and capability to assist patients with mobility and personal care.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and emergency procedures in a healthcare setting.
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and communication purposes.
