Job Brief

The Operations Forester plays a crucial role in managing public and private forested lands to balance economic, recreational, and conservation objectives. This position requires a strong understanding of forestry management practices, timber inventory, and environmental regulations. Ideal candidates will possess experience in assessing timber value, negotiating contracts for timber procurement, and developing sustainable forestry plans that promote healthy tree growth and habitat conservation.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee the sustainable management of forested lands to ensure ecological balance and economic viability.
  • Conduct detailed timber inventories to assess the type, volume, and location of standing timber.
  • Evaluate timber worth and negotiate purchase agreements while drafting and executing procurement contracts.
  • Develop and implement conservation strategies for wildlife habitats, water quality, creek beds, and soil stability.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental regulations and best management practices.
  • Create and oversee reforestation plans, including the selection of tree species and planting schedules.
  • Monitor tree health and growth, identifying and addressing any issues that may arise.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including landowners and conservation groups, to promote sustainable forestry initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in forestry operations, timber management, and ecological conservation.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to conduct timber appraisals and land assessments.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance standards related to forestry.
  • Proficient in GIS technology and forestry management software.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills for stakeholder engagement.
  • Certifications such as a Registered Forester (RF) or Certified Forester (CF) are preferred.
