Job Brief

The Ocular Care Technologist plays a crucial role in assisting ophthalmologists by performing essential ophthalmic clinical functions. This position requires a blend of technical skills and patient care expertise. The Ocular Care Technologist will conduct eye exams, administer eye medications, and provide patients with instructions on the care and use of corrective lenses. Ideal candidates will possess strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of ocular health.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive eye examinations and vision tests to assess visual acuity and overall ocular health.
  • Administer prescribed eye medications and treatments under the supervision of an ophthalmologist.
  • Educate patients on the proper use and care of corrective lenses, including glasses and contact lenses.
  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of ophthalmic equipment and examination rooms.
  • Document patient history and clinical findings accurately in electronic health records (EHR).
  • Support ophthalmologists during various procedures, ensuring a sterile and efficient environment.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments and coordinate patient care management effectively.
  • Stay updated on advancements in ocular technology and best practices in eye care.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; an associate degree or certification in ophthalmic technology preferred.
  • Proven experience in a clinical setting, preferably in ophthalmology or optometry.
  • Knowledge of ocular anatomy, common eye diseases, and visual testing techniques.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and medical billing practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with patients and healthcare staff.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Certification as an Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) is a plus.
