Job Brief

The Neurosurgical Nurse Practitioner is responsible for diagnosing and treating acute, episodic, or chronic neurological conditions, working independently or collaboratively within a healthcare team. This role emphasizes health promotion, disease prevention, and may include ordering, performing, and interpreting diagnostic tests such as lab work and X-rays. Additionally, the Neurosurgical Nurse Practitioner has the authority to prescribe medications, making it essential to possess specialized graduate education and advanced clinical skills in neurosurgery and patient management.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments and evaluations of patients with neurological disorders.
  • Diagnose acute and chronic illnesses and develop treatment plans based on evidence-based practices.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, including laboratory tests and imaging studies.
  • Prescribe medications and manage pharmacotherapy for patients undergoing neurosurgical treatments.
  • Provide patient education on health promotion, disease prevention, and post-operative care.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Nursing with a specialization in Nurse Practitioner.
  • Current and valid Nurse Practitioner certification in the state of practice.
  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in a neurosurgical or critical care setting preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of neurological assessment techniques and treatment modalities.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills for effective patient interaction.
  • Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and other relevant healthcare technologies.
