Job Brief
The Mortician Helper plays a crucial role in supporting funeral services by performing various essential tasks related to the preparation and execution of funeral ceremonies. This position requires hands-on experience in a funeral home environment, along with strong organizational and interpersonal skills. The Mortician Helper assists the funeral director and staff in ensuring a dignified and respectful service for grieving families, while maintaining a compassionate and professional demeanor.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the placement of caskets in parlors or chapels prior to services to ensure proper visibility and accessibility for mourners.
- Arrange floral offerings and lighting around the casket to enhance the ambiance of the service.
- Direct and escort mourners to their seats, providing guidance and support during the service.
- Close caskets and prepare them for transportation or burial with attention to detail and respect.
- Issue, store, and maintain funeral equipment, ensuring everything is ready for use during services.
- Support the funeral director in setting up and dismantling service areas post-ceremony.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the funeral home and surrounding areas.
- Provide compassionate support to families, addressing their needs and inquiries with sensitivity.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; some experience in a funeral home setting is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with families and staff.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
- Physical stamina to handle lifting and moving of caskets and funeral equipment.
- Basic understanding of funeral service practices and procedures.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record for transportation of equipment, if necessary.
- Certification in CPR and First Aid is a plus.
