Job Brief
As a Merchant Seaman, you will play a vital role in the operation and maintenance of marine vessels. Responsible for standing watch, monitoring navigational safety, and ensuring the efficient handling of cargo, you will collaborate closely with the captain and crew. This position requires a commitment to safety, adherence to maritime regulations, and proficiency in ship maintenance tasks. Candidates should possess a valid government-issued certification and, when applicable, tankerman certification for handling liquid cargo.
Responsibilities
- Stand watch to monitor vessel navigation and detect obstructions in the waterway.
- Measure water depth and operate the wheel on the bridge under the guidance of the captain or mate.
- Utilize emergency equipment as directed to ensure the safety of the vessel and crew.
- Break out, rig, overhaul, and store cargo-handling gear and running rigging.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks to preserve the ship’s painted surfaces and maintain onboard equipment.
- Assist in loading and unloading cargo while ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
- Work collaboratively with fellow crew members to ensure seamless vessel operations.
- Maintain knowledge of maritime regulations and industry best practices.
Requirements
- Valid government-issued Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC).
- Tankerman certification is required when working on liquid-carrying vessels.
- Experience as an able seaman or ordinary seaman is preferred.
- Proficiency in navigation, safety protocols, and emergency procedures.
- Strong mechanical skills for maintenance and repair of ship equipment.
- Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively.
- Willingness to work in various weather conditions and extended hours.
