Job Brief

The Merchant Mariner plays a crucial role in the operation of commercial vessels, ensuring safe navigation and cargo handling. This position requires standing watch to monitor for obstructions, managing water depth measurements, and utilizing emergency equipment as directed. Ideal candidates must possess a government-issued certification, along with tankerman certification for those working on liquid-carrying vessels. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and mechanical skills are essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Stand watch to detect obstructions in the vessel’s path and assess water depth.
  • Operate the vessel’s steering mechanism and utilize emergency equipment as directed by the captain or mate.
  • Break out, rig, overhaul, and store cargo-handling gear including stationary and running rigging.
  • Perform routine maintenance to preserve the painted surface of the ship and maintain onboard equipment.
  • Assist in loading and unloading cargo, ensuring safe and efficient operations.
  • Follow safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Collaborate with crew members to execute operational plans and respond to emergencies.

Requirements

  • Valid Merchant Mariner credential issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.
  • Tankerman certification for operations aboard liquid-carrying vessels.
  • Experience in marine operations, preferably as an able seaman or ordinary seaman.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to conduct maintenance tasks.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and emergency response procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Willingness to work in various weather conditions and on extended shifts.
