Job Brief
The Log Sorter is responsible for grading and estimating the marketable content or value of logs and pulpwood in sorting yards, millponds, and log decks. This role requires keen attention to detail and expertise in inspecting logs for defects, as well as measuring logs to determine their volume. Candidates should possess strong analytical skills, experience in logging operations, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Grade logs based on quality, size, and marketable content to maximize value.
- Inspect logs for defects, disease, or damage, ensuring only suitable materials are processed.
- Measure logs accurately to determine volume and weight for inventory management.
- Sort logs into appropriate categories for processing, shipping, or storage.
- Maintain detailed records of log assessments and inventory levels.
- Collaborate with forestry professionals to optimize sorting processes and practices.
- Adhere to industry safety standards and protocols while handling logs.
- Utilize sorting equipment and tools effectively to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in forestry or a related field is a plus.
- Proven experience in logging, forestry, or a related industry.
- Strong understanding of log grading and measurement techniques.
- Familiarity with safety standards and practices in the logging industry.
- Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
- Ability to operate sorting machinery and tools safely and efficiently.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Physical stamina and ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
