Job Brief

The Jail Guard plays a critical role in maintaining safety and security within penal or rehabilitative institutions. Responsible for overseeing inmate behavior, ensuring compliance with regulations, and safeguarding the facility, this position requires strong observational skills, the ability to handle conflict, and effective communication. Candidates should possess prior experience in correctional settings or law enforcement, along with the ability to work collaboratively with a team to uphold institutional protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor inmate activities to ensure compliance with facility rules and regulations.
  • Conduct regular inspections of cells and common areas to maintain safety and security.
  • Manage inmate transportation to and from courtrooms, medical facilities, and other locations.
  • Respond promptly to incidents and emergencies, utilizing de-escalation techniques when necessary.
  • Document inmate behavior and incidents accurately to maintain thorough records.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement and correctional staff to enforce security measures.
  • Provide support and guidance to inmates to promote rehabilitation and positive behavior.
  • Attend training sessions and continually update knowledge on safety regulations and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in criminal justice or related field preferred.
  • Prior experience in correctional facilities or law enforcement is highly desirable.
  • Strong observational and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to work in high-stress environments and manage potentially volatile situations.
  • Knowledge of security protocols, inmate rights, and correctional facility operations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid is a plus.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to meet rigorous demands of the role.
