Job Brief

The Genealogist is responsible for conducting thorough research, analyzing historical records, and interpreting past events through various sources, including government documents, newspapers, photographs, and personal manuscripts. This role requires expertise in genealogical research methods, strong analytical skills, and a keen attention to detail. Ideal candidates will have experience in utilizing both digital and traditional research tools to construct accurate family histories and lineages.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth genealogical research using various sources such as archives, libraries, and online databases.
  • Analyze and interpret historical documents, photographs, and oral histories to construct accurate family trees.
  • Document and organize findings in clear and comprehensive reports for clients or publications.
  • Collaborate with clients to understand their genealogical goals and provide expert advice on research strategies.
  • Stay current with archival resources, genealogical methodologies, and technology trends in the field.
  • Assist clients in tracing ancestry and resolving genealogical challenges through problem-solving techniques.
  • Participate in genealogical societies and community outreach to promote awareness and education.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in History, Anthropology, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Proven experience in genealogical research, with a strong portfolio of completed projects.
  • Proficiency in using genealogical software and online research tools (e.g., Ancestry.com, FamilySearch).
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for presenting findings clearly.
  • Membership in a recognized genealogical society is a plus.
  • Familiarity with legal and ethical considerations in genealogical research.
