Job Brief
As a Freight Brake Operator, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of freight trains. This position involves operating and monitoring railroad track switches and locomotive instruments, as well as coupling and uncoupling rolling stock to assemble or disassemble trains. The ideal candidate will have a keen eye for detail, strong communication skills, and a commitment to safety within the rail transportation industry.
Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor railroad track switches and locomotive instruments to facilitate safe train operations.
- Couple and uncouple rolling stock to make up or break up trains as required.
- Observe and relay traffic signals to ensure adherence to operational protocols.
- Inspect couplings, air hoses, journal boxes, and hand brakes for functionality and safety compliance.
- Monitor for dragging equipment or obstacles on rights-of-way to prevent accidents.
- Communicate effectively with train crews and dispatchers to coordinate operations.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections and operational activities.
- Adhere to safety regulations and operational standards at all times.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional training in rail operations is a plus.
- Prior experience as a Freight Brake Operator or in a related role within the rail industry.
- Strong understanding of railroad safety protocols and operational procedures.
- Ability to operate locomotive instruments and track switching devices effectively.
- Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions and meet physical demands of the role.
- Valid certification or license for operating freight trains may be required.
