Job Brief

The Forestry Scientist plays a pivotal role in managing public and private forested lands, focusing on economic, recreational, and conservation objectives. This position requires expertise in inventorying timber resources, appraising timber value, and negotiating procurement contracts. The ideal candidate will also develop strategies for wildlife habitat conservation, water quality management, and soil stability compliance with environmental regulations. Proficiency in devising reforestation plans, monitoring tree health, and determining optimal harvesting schedules is essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee public and private forested lands to balance economic, recreational, and conservation needs.
  • Conduct comprehensive inventories of standing timber, documenting type, quantity, and location.
  • Assess and appraise the worth of timber, facilitating procurement negotiations and contract development.
  • Implement strategies to conserve wildlife habitats, maintain creek beds, and uphold water quality and soil stability.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations related to forestry practices and land management.
  • Design and execute plans for planting and cultivating new trees, enhancing forest vitality.
  • Monitor the growth and health of trees, identifying and addressing any issues that arise.
  • Determine and optimize harvesting schedules to maximize timber yield while ensuring sustainability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Proven experience in forest management, timber appraisal, and environmental conservation.
  • Strong knowledge of forestry practices, wildlife conservation, and ecological regulations.
  • Proficiency in using forestry management software and GIS technology for data analysis.
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills for stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in diverse environments.
  • Familiarity with sustainable forestry practices and land use planning.
  • Certifications such as Registered Forester (RF) or Certified Forester (CF) are a plus.
