Job Brief
As a Ferryboat Captain, you will be responsible for commanding and supervising the operations of ferryboats and other water vessels. Your primary duties will include ensuring the safe navigation of passengers and cargo across designated routes while adhering to maritime laws and safety regulations. The ideal candidate will possess a valid U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license and have experience in operating various types of vessels. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential for success in this role.
Responsibilities
- Navigate the ferryboat along established routes, ensuring timely and safe transport of passengers and vehicles.
- Supervise crew members and coordinate onboard operations to maintain a high standard of service and safety.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and drills to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.
- Monitor weather conditions, tides, and currents to make informed decisions about safe navigation.
- Communicate effectively with passengers, crew, and maritime authorities regarding operational updates and safety protocols.
- Maintain accurate logs of vessel operations, incidents, and maintenance activities.
- Respond to emergencies and implement safety procedures to protect passengers and crew.
- Provide training and guidance to crew members to enhance their skills and ensure adherence to safety standards.
Requirements
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license (Master or Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels).
- Proven experience operating ferryboats or similar vessels in a commercial setting.
- Strong knowledge of maritime navigation, safety regulations, and emergency procedures.
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to manage a diverse crew effectively.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to interact with passengers and authorities.
- Certifications in first aid, CPR, and firefighting are highly desirable.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make quick decisions in high-pressure situations.
