Job Brief
As an Ethnographic Materials Conservator, you will play a crucial role in restoring, maintaining, and preparing diverse objects within museum collections for storage, research, or exhibition. This position requires expertise in the conservation of specimens such as fossils, skeletal parts, botanicals, and various artifacts, including textiles and artwork. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a keen eye for detail, and hands-on experience in conservation techniques, ensuring the preservation of cultural heritage for future generations.
Responsibilities
- Assess and analyze the condition of ethnographic materials to determine necessary conservation treatments.
- Perform restoration and preservation activities on a variety of artifacts, including textiles, artifacts, and documents.
- Document conservation processes and maintain accurate records of work performed on cultural objects.
- Collaborate with museum staff to prepare objects for exhibitions, including installation and arrangement.
- Conduct preventive conservation measures to protect items from deterioration and environmental damage.
- Research and implement best practices in conservation techniques and materials.
- Provide recommendations for storage and display solutions to enhance the longevity of the collection.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with advancements in conservation science.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Conservation, Art History, Archaeology, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Proven experience in materials conservation, particularly with ethnographic artifacts and specimens.
- Strong knowledge of conservation ethics and methodologies, including analytical techniques.
- Familiarity with relevant conservation tools, materials, and documentation practices.
- Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving abilities to assess and address conservation needs.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with team members and convey conservation strategies.
- Membership in a professional conservation organization is a plus.
