Job Brief

As an Emergency Communications Dispatcher, you will operate telephone, radio, and other communication systems to effectively manage incoming requests for emergency assistance at 9-1-1 public safety answering points and emergency operations centers. This role requires a high level of detail orientation and the ability to remain calm under pressure while gathering essential information regarding crimes, medical emergencies, threats, and other public safety matters. Ideal candidates will possess strong communication skills and experience in emergency dispatching or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and assess emergency and non-emergency calls, prioritizing responses based on urgency and severity.
  • Gather and relay critical information to law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical personnel.
  • Operate communication equipment, including telephones, radios, and computer-aided dispatch systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of calls, responses, and incidents for reporting and analysis.
  • Provide guidance and information to callers during emergencies, utilizing knowledge of emergency procedures.
  • Access and utilize sensitive databases to retrieve vital information related to incidents and individuals.
  • Coordinate with multiple agencies to ensure a timely and effective emergency response.
  • Participate in ongoing training and certification programs to stay current with emergency response protocols.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in emergency management or communications preferred.
  • Prior experience in emergency dispatching or public safety communications is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement, fire, and medical emergency procedures and protocols.
  • Proficiency in operating communication systems and software applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to multitask and manage high-stress situations effectively.
  • Certification in emergency dispatch or related field may be required.
  • Familiarity with local geography and community resources is an asset.
