Job Brief
As a Dinkey Engine Firer, you will be responsible for operating and monitoring railroad track switches and locomotive instruments to ensure safe and efficient train operations. This role requires vigilance in observing traffic signals and conducting inspections of equipment such as couplings, air hoses, and hand brakes. Ideal candidates will possess strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and a foundational knowledge of railway operations. Previous experience in a railroad or locomotive environment is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor railroad track switches to facilitate smooth train transitions.
- Couple and uncouple rolling stock to assemble and disassemble trains as needed.
- Watch for and relay traffic signals to ensure timely and safe train movement.
- Inspect couplings, air hoses, journal boxes, and hand brakes for functionality and safety.
- Identify dragging equipment or obstacles on rights-of-way and report them promptly.
- Maintain accurate records of operations and equipment conditions.
- Collaborate with other railroad personnel to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- Respond to emergency situations and take appropriate action to ensure safety.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; relevant technical training is a plus.
- Experience in railroad operations, particularly in locomotive or engine roles.
- Strong understanding of railroad safety protocols and regulations.
- Proficiency in operating and monitoring locomotive instruments and equipment.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and maintain focus during long hours.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Valid driver’s license; additional certifications related to railroad operations may be required.
