Job Brief
The Diesel Locomotive Firer is responsible for operating and monitoring railroad track switches and locomotive instruments to ensure safe and efficient train operations. This role requires a keen eye for detail, as the Firer will couple or uncouple rolling stock, inspect essential equipment, and relay critical traffic signals. Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor railroad track switches and locomotive instruments to facilitate safe train movements.
- Couple and uncouple rolling stock to assemble and disassemble trains as required.
- Watch for and relay traffic signals to ensure compliance with operational protocols.
- Inspect couplings, air hoses, journal boxes, and hand brakes for functionality and safety.
- Monitor for dragging equipment or obstacles on rights-of-way to prevent accidents.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections and operational activities as required.
- Collaborate with train engineers and conductors to coordinate movements and ensure safety.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional training in railroad operations is preferred.
- Knowledge of locomotive systems, track switching, and safety protocols in the rail industry.
- Strong mechanical skills with the ability to troubleshoot and inspect rail equipment.
- Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record; ability to obtain necessary certifications.
- Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with team members.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and operate in a time-sensitive environment.
