Job Brief

As a Detention Officer, you will play a critical role in maintaining safety and security within penal and rehabilitative institutions. You will be responsible for guarding inmates, overseeing their daily activities, and enforcing institutional regulations. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in law enforcement or correctional facilities, strong communication skills, and the ability to handle stressful situations effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor inmate behavior and interactions to maintain a safe and secure environment.
  • Conduct regular inspections of facilities to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Escort inmates during transport to and from court appearances, medical appointments, and other locations.
  • Enforce institutional rules and regulations, applying disciplinary measures as necessary.
  • Document and report incidents, inmate behavior, and any security breaches in accordance with procedures.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement and correctional staff to ensure the safety of all personnel and inmates.
  • Provide emergency response and crisis intervention as needed.
  • Participate in ongoing training to stay current with best practices in detention facility operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional education or training in criminal justice is a plus.
  • Prior experience in law enforcement, corrections, or security preferred.
  • Ability to pass background checks and maintain required certifications (e.g., CPR, First Aid).
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with inmates and staff.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to handle potentially dangerous situations.
  • Knowledge of legal regulations and policies related to detention facilities.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
