Job Brief
The Deck Officer plays a vital role in the safe and efficient operation of maritime vessels, including tugboats and ferryboats. As a licensed professional, the Deck Officer will command and supervise vessel operations, ensuring compliance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations while maintaining a high standard of safety and performance.
Responsibilities
- Command and oversee the operation of ships and water vessels, ensuring safe navigation and compliance with maritime regulations.
- Monitor vessel performance and environmental conditions to make informed decisions regarding course and speed adjustments.
- Supervise deck crew activities, providing training and guidance to ensure efficient and safe operations.
- Conduct regular safety drills and inspections to maintain readiness for emergency situations.
- Maintain accurate records of vessel operations, including logs, reports, and maintenance schedules.
- Coordinate with port authorities and other maritime stakeholders to facilitate smooth vessel operations.
- Implement and enforce safety protocols to protect crew, passengers, and the marine environment.
- Respond effectively to navigational hazards and emergencies, utilizing problem-solving skills and critical thinking.
Requirements
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard license for the operation of specified vessels.
- Proven experience in a deck officer role or similar maritime position.
- Strong knowledge of maritime navigation, safety regulations, and vessel management practices.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to perform under pressure while making quick, informed decisions.
- Familiarity with maritime communication and navigation equipment.
- Physical fitness and the capability to perform duties in various weather conditions.
- First Aid and CPR certification is preferred.
