Job Brief
As a Deck Cadet, you will play a vital role in maritime operations, closely assisting the captain and crew in maintaining the safety and efficiency of the vessel. This entry-level position requires you to stand watch, monitor for obstructions, and perform essential maintenance tasks. Ideal candidates will possess a strong understanding of maritime protocols, safety regulations, and cargo-handling procedures, alongside relevant certifications.
Responsibilities
- Stand watch to monitor navigational safety and report any obstructions in the vessel’s path.
- Measure water depth and assist in steering operations under the direction of the captain or mate.
- Utilize emergency equipment as required to ensure crew and vessel safety.
- Break out, rig, overhaul, and store cargo-handling gear, including stationary rigging and running gear.
- Conduct routine maintenance on the vessel’s painted surfaces and equipment to ensure operational readiness.
- Assist in the loading and unloading of cargo, adhering to safety standards and procedures.
- Participate in safety drills and training to enhance emergency preparedness.
- Maintain accurate records of watch activities and cargo operations as instructed.
Requirements
- Must hold a valid government-issued certification for maritime operations.
- Tankerman certification is required for positions on liquid-carrying vessels.
- Knowledge of nautical terms and maritime safety regulations.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
- Physical fitness and capability to perform strenuous tasks on board.
- Basic understanding of vessel maintenance practices and equipment handling.
- Prior experience as able seamen or ordinary seamen is preferred but not mandatory.
