Job Brief

The Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating medically-approved recreation programs for patients in hospitals, nursing homes, or other healthcare institutions. This role requires a blend of clinical assessment skills and creative program development to enhance patients’ physical, emotional, and social well-being through tailored recreational activities, including sports, trips, dramatics, social events, and crafts. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, a solid understanding of therapeutic recreation principles, and experience working in healthcare settings.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement individualized recreational therapy programs based on patient assessments and therapeutic goals.
  • Evaluate patient progress and adjust recreational activities to meet changing needs and conditions.
  • Facilitate group and individual activities that promote physical, social, and emotional wellness.
  • Collaborate with healthcare teams to integrate recreation therapy into overall patient care.
  • Educate patients and families about the benefits of recreational therapy and encourage participation.
  • Maintain accurate records of patient participation, progress, and feedback on recreational activities.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety and health regulations regarding recreational activities.
  • Stay updated on current trends and best practices in therapeutic recreation and related fields.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, or a related field.
  • Current certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).
  • Strong knowledge of therapeutic recreation principles, assessment tools, and activity planning.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Experience working with diverse populations in healthcare or rehabilitation settings.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and adapt to varying patient needs.
  • Proficient in documentation and reporting of patient progress and program effectiveness.
