Job Brief

The Children’s Librarian is responsible for administering and maintaining library services catering specifically to children and young adults. This role involves managing collections of informational materials, facilitating access to books, periodicals, recordings, and digital resources. A successful candidate will possess a passion for promoting literacy and a strong understanding of child development, alongside excellent organizational and communication skills. The Children’s Librarian will collaborate with educators, parents, and community members to enhance youth engagement and support educational initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement engaging programs and activities that promote reading and literacy among children.
  • Catalog, acquire, and circulate library materials, ensuring accessibility and organization.
  • Provide reference and user services, assisting children and caregivers in locating information and resources.
  • Conduct storytime sessions and workshops to foster a love for reading and learning.
  • Maintain a welcoming and safe library environment for children and families.
  • Collaborate with teachers and community organizations to support educational goals and literacy initiatives.
  • Stay updated with trends in children’s literature and library services to enhance collections and programming.
  • Manage library media equipment and technology to facilitate learning and access to information.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Experience working in a library setting, particularly with children and young adults.
  • Familiarity with library management systems and digital resources.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage children effectively.
  • Knowledge of early childhood development and educational methodologies.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and execute programs and events for diverse audiences.
  • Certification from the American Library Association (ALA) is preferred.
