Job Brief
The Bridge Operator is responsible for operating and tending bridges, canal locks, and lighthouses, ensuring safe and efficient marine passage on inland waterways. This role requires a keen understanding of waterway operations and navigation protocols. Responsibilities
- Operate drawbridges, lock systems, and slip bridges to facilitate marine traffic.
- Monitor and control bridge mechanisms and water levels to ensure safe passage for vessels.
- Communicate with boat operators to coordinate bridge openings and closings.
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of bridge equipment and infrastructure.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding waterway operations.
- Respond to emergency situations, including mechanical failures or adverse weather conditions, promptly and effectively.
- Record operational data and report any incidents or irregularities to supervisory personnel.
- Supervise other bridge operators and maintain a safe working environment.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; relevant certifications in bridge operation preferred.
- Experience in marine navigation, waterway management, or a related field.
- Strong technical skills related to mechanical systems and operational protocols.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interaction with the marine community.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and respond to emergencies.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in waterway operations.
- Proficiency in using communication and monitoring equipment.
