Job Brief
The Block Layer is responsible for laying and binding various building materials, including brick, concrete block, and glass block, utilizing mortar and other substances to construct or repair walls, partitions, and other structures. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of masonry techniques and materials, with experience in both residential and commercial projects. Key skills include attention to detail, physical stamina, and the ability to read blueprints and technical drawings.
Responsibilities
- Lay and bind building materials such as brick, concrete block, and structural tile to construct walls and partitions.
- Prepare and mix mortar and other binding substances to ensure effective adhesion and stability.
- Measure and cut materials to specifications using hand and power tools.
- Install mortarless segmental concrete masonry wall units in landscaping and structural applications.
- Repair and maintain existing masonry structures, ensuring durability and aesthetic quality.
- Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and specifications to determine project requirements.
- Collaborate with other construction professionals to ensure project completion and safety compliance.
- Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a masonry apprenticeship program is preferred.
- Proven experience as a Block Layer or in a similar masonry role.
- Strong knowledge of masonry materials, tools, and techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
- Physical stamina and the ability to lift heavy materials and work in various weather conditions.
- Excellent attention to detail and quality craftsmanship.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- OSHA safety certification or willingness to obtain certification.
