Job Brief

The Barge Captain leads and manages the operations of various water vessels, including tugboats and ferryboats, ensuring safe and efficient navigation through waterways. This role requires extensive experience in maritime operations, strong leadership skills, and a valid U.S. Coast Guard-issued captain’s license. The Barge Captain is responsible for directing crew members, overseeing cargo loading and unloading, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Command and navigate vessels safely through diverse water environments.
  • Supervise crew members, ensuring proper training and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Plan and execute voyages, including scheduling and route selection.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and maintain equipment in compliance with regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with port authorities and other watercraft to coordinate operations.
  • Manage cargo loading and unloading processes, ensuring proper securing and handling.
  • Document all navigational activities, inspections, and incidents as required by maritime law.
  • Respond to emergencies and implement corrective actions to ensure crew and vessel safety.

Requirements

  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license.
  • Proven experience as a Barge Captain or in a similar maritime leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of navigation techniques and maritime regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to make quick decisions in emergency situations.
  • Familiarity with vessel maintenance and safety equipment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Physical fitness and ability to work in various weather conditions.
