Job Brief
The Tank Car Loader is responsible for the safe loading and unloading of chemicals and bulk solids, including materials such as coal, sand, and grain, into or from tank cars, trucks, or ships. This role requires experience in material handling and operation of moving equipment. Candidates should possess strong attention to detail, ensuring proper gauging, sampling of shipping tanks, and testing for leaks to maintain safety and compliance with industry regulations.
Responsibilities
- Load and unload chemicals, coal, sand, grain, and other bulk solids into and from tank cars, trucks, and ships using material moving equipment.
- Operate equipment such as forklifts, cranes, and conveyor systems for efficient material handling.
- Conduct regular inspections of tank cars and shipping equipment to ensure safe loading and compliance with safety standards.
- Gauge and sample shipping tanks to determine contents and perform leak tests as required.
- Maintain accurate records of materials loaded and unloaded for inventory and regulatory compliance.
- Collaborate with logistics and shipping teams to ensure timely transportation of materials.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures to minimize the risk of accidents and protect personnel and the environment.
- Perform routine maintenance on equipment and report any malfunctions to supervisors.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional training in material handling is preferred.
- Proven experience in loading and unloading materials, preferably in a chemical or bulk material environment.
- Familiarity with safety regulations and best practices in material handling and transportation.
- Ability to operate forklifts, cranes, and other material handling equipment safely and efficiently.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to perform quality checks on materials.
- Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Basic computer skills for record-keeping and inventory management.
- Certification in hazardous materials handling is a plus.
