Job Brief
The Switch Coupler plays a critical role in the efficient operation of railroad systems by operating or monitoring track switches and locomotive instruments. This position requires a keen eye for detail and the ability to ensure safe coupling and uncoupling of rolling stock to facilitate train assembly and disassembly. Ideal candidates will possess experience in railroad operations, demonstrate strong communication skills, and uphold rigorous safety standards while performing inspections and monitoring traffic signals.
Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor railroad track switches to facilitate safe and efficient train movements.
- Couple and uncouple rolling stock to form and break up trains as necessary.
- Observe and relay traffic signals to ensure safe operation of trains.
- Inspect couplings, air hoses, journal boxes, and hand brakes for proper functionality.
- Monitor for dragging equipment or obstacles on the right-of-way to maintain safety.
- Communicate effectively with train crews and dispatchers regarding track conditions and operations.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections and operations to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training in railroad operations is a plus.
- Proven experience in a railroad environment, preferably as a switch coupler or similar role.
- Strong understanding of railroad safety standards and operational procedures.
- Ability to operate locomotive instruments and monitoring equipment.
- Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with team members.
- Physical stamina and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Certification in railroad operations or safety may be required.
