Job Brief

As a Public Safety Dispatcher, you will play a crucial role in emergency response by efficiently operating communication systems to receive and relay requests for assistance at 9-1-1 public safety answering points. This position requires a skilled communicator with a strong ability to assess critical information related to various public safety matters, including crimes, medical emergencies, and natural disasters. The ideal candidate will possess excellent multitasking capabilities, experience in high-pressure situations, and a comprehensive understanding of emergency response procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Operate telephone, radio, and other communication systems to receive emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Assess and prioritize incoming requests for assistance, ensuring prompt and accurate response.
  • Gather vital information from callers regarding incidents such as crimes, medical emergencies, fires, and threats to public safety.
  • Provide accurate information and instructions to law enforcement and emergency response personnel.
  • Access and utilize sensitive databases to retrieve critical information as needed.
  • Maintain clear and concise records of all communications and actions taken during incidents.
  • Coordinate response efforts between various emergency services and agencies.
  • Provide additional guidance to callers based on knowledge of emergency medical, law enforcement, and fire procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in public safety or emergency management is a plus.
  • Proven experience in a dispatch or emergency response role preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Familiarity with emergency communication protocols and procedures.
  • Ability to multitask and manage stressful situations effectively.
  • Certification in CPR/First Aid and completion of Public Safety Dispatcher training programs is preferred.
  • Proficiency in using computer systems and dispatch software.
  • Knowledge of local geography and landmarks to assist with timely response efforts.
