Job Brief

As a Paintings Conservator, you will play a critical role in the preservation, restoration, and maintenance of artworks in museum collections. Your expertise will ensure that paintings are properly prepared for storage, research, or exhibition while safeguarding their historical integrity. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of art conservation techniques, materials, and historical contexts, alongside strong analytical skills. Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough assessments of paintings to determine conservation needs and devise restoration plans.
  • Utilize advanced conservation techniques to restore and maintain artworks, including cleaning, retouching, and varnishing.
  • Document restoration processes and condition reports, maintaining accurate records for future reference.
  • Collaborate with curators and other museum staff to prepare paintings for exhibits, ensuring proper installation and arrangement.
  • Develop and implement preventive conservation measures to protect artworks from environmental damage.
  • Research and analyze the historical and artistic context of each piece to inform restoration practices.
  • Educate museum staff and visitors on conservation practices and the significance of art preservation.
  • Stay updated on advancements in conservation technology and methodologies to enhance restoration techniques.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Art Conservation, Fine Arts, or related field.
  • Proven experience as a Paintings Conservator or in a similar role within a museum or gallery environment.
  • Strong understanding of art materials, techniques, and deterioration processes.
  • Proficiency in using conservation tools and equipment, including microscopes and chemical solutions.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with colleagues and educating the public.
  • Familiarity with documentation practices and conservation standards in the museum sector.
  • Membership in relevant professional organizations (e.g., AIC) is preferred.
