Job Brief

As a Marine Mammal Trainer, you will be responsible for training and conditioning marine mammals for performance, obedience, and interaction with humans. This role requires a deep understanding of animal behavior, effective communication skills, and a commitment to animal welfare. You will work with various marine species to develop and implement training programs that ensure animals respond positively to commands, participate in shows, and assist individuals with disabilities. The ideal candidate will possess hands-on experience in marine animal training, a passion for marine conservation, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Train marine mammals to perform specific behaviors and routines for shows, educational programs, and rehabilitation efforts.
  • Condition animals to respond to verbal commands and hand signals, ensuring compliance and safety.
  • Accustom animals to human interaction, enhancing their comfort and reducing stress during training sessions.
  • Maintain detailed records of training progress and behavioral assessments for each marine mammal.
  • Collaborate with veterinarians and animal care staff to ensure the health and well-being of all marine mammals.
  • Develop and implement innovative training techniques based on current best practices in animal behavior science.
  • Engage in public education and outreach, demonstrating trained behaviors during live presentations.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training workshops to enhance skills and knowledge in marine mammal care and training.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a marine mammal trainer or in a related field, with a focus on animal behavior and training methodologies.
  • Degree in Marine Biology, Animal Behavior, Zoology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of marine mammal species, habitats, and conservation needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with animals and team members.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as required by animal training schedules.
  • CPR and First Aid certification for both humans and animals is a plus.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to perform tasks in various weather conditions.
