Job Brief
As a Library Cataloging Technician, you will play a vital role in supporting library operations by assisting patrons in navigating library catalogs, databases, and indexes to locate books and other materials. You will be responsible for compiling records, sorting and shelving media, and engaging in brief consultations to answer reference inquiries. This position requires strong organizational skills and attention to detail, as well as a commitment to providing exceptional service in both traditional and mobile library settings.
Responsibilities
- Assist patrons in utilizing library catalogs, databases, and indexes to locate books and materials.
- Answer reference questions through brief consultations and provide guidance on library services.
- Compile and maintain accurate records of library materials and transactions.
- Sort, shelve, and organize books and media in accordance with library classification systems.
- Remove or repair damaged books and other media to ensure collection integrity.
- Register new patrons and manage circulation processes, including checking materials in and out.
- Restock and replace materials in shelving areas (stacks) or files as needed.
- Drive bookmobiles and assist with mobile library services, reaching underserved communities.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Library Science or related field preferred.
- Proven experience in library operations, cataloging, or customer service roles.
- Familiarity with library cataloging systems and digital databases.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in managing library materials.
- Excellent communication skills for effective patron interaction and support.
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting and shelving books or media.
- Knowledge of library classification systems and best practices for cataloging.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record for mobile library operations, if applicable.
