Job Brief
As a Children’s Librarian, you will play a vital role in fostering a love for reading and learning among young patrons. You will administer and maintain library collections, providing essential resources and services tailored for children. This position requires a blend of creativity, organization, and communication skills to effectively manage library materials and engage with children through storytelling, educational programming, and reference services. A background in library science or a related field, along with relevant experience in children’s literature and educational programming, is essential for success in this role.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement engaging programs and activities that promote literacy and a love for reading among children.
- Administer and maintain library collections, including acquiring, cataloging, and circulating materials appropriate for children.
- Provide reference services, assisting children and caregivers in locating and utilizing informational resources.
- Organize and manage library events, including storytime sessions, book clubs, and educational workshops.
- Collaborate with educators and community organizations to enhance library services and outreach initiatives.
- Guide children in using library technology and media resources, including e-books and educational databases.
- Evaluate and select new materials to ensure a diverse and relevant collection for young readers.
- Maintain a welcoming and safe environment for children and their families within the library.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Experience working in a public library or educational setting, preferably with children.
- Strong understanding of children’s literature, developmental stages, and educational practices.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with children and families.
- Proficiency in library management systems and digital media resources.
- Knowledge of collection development and information literacy strategies.
- Ability to design and implement educational programs that meet the needs of diverse populations.
- Current certification in First Aid and CPR (preferred).
