Job Brief
As an Aquarist, you will be responsible for the care and management of aquatic life within various environments, including aquariums and marine exhibits. This role requires hands-on experience in animal husbandry, water quality management, and habitat maintenance. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of aquatic ecosystems, demonstrate excellent observational skills, and have a passion for marine biology. You will play a vital role in ensuring the health and well-being of fish and other aquatic species, while also engaging in educational outreach.
Responsibilities
- Feed and provide proper nutrition to a variety of aquatic species, ensuring dietary needs are met.
- Monitor and maintain water quality parameters, including pH, salinity, and temperature.
- Groom and care for aquatic animals, performing health assessments and treatments as needed.
- Clean and disinfect tanks, ensuring optimal living conditions for aquatic life.
- Maintain detailed records of animal health, treatments, and feeding schedules.
- Assist in the design and maintenance of exhibits, enhancing the aesthetic and educational value.
- Conduct educational programs and presentations for visitors to promote marine conservation.
- Collaborate with veterinary staff to develop and implement health management plans for aquatic species.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in marine biology, zoology, or a related field is preferred.
- Proven experience in aquarist roles or related animal care positions.
- Familiarity with aquatic ecosystems and species-specific care.
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail for monitoring animal health.
- Ability to work with various water quality testing equipment.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for educational outreach.
- Certifications in animal care or aquatic management are a plus.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as required.
